BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, June 3rd 2024 (DAY 9)

 Dear Families,

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Prom was amazing! A very special evening for our well deserving Grade 12 class. Huge thank-you to all of the hands making this special evening so special.  Thank-you in advance for taking the time to review updates and important reminders! Any questions or concerns let me know.                                                 Updates and Important Information

1) Manuel's River Field Trip: This is a reminder that the Grade 7 and Healthy Living 1200 class are taking an educational field trip to Manuel's River on Monday, June 3rd 2024. Learning is best when experienced. Please ensure form and fee are submitted. *Please note if there are any organizations that would like to sponsor this field trip to ensure its programming continues for years to come, please contact the school. We currently have Greens Seafood sponsoring our Science and Entrepreneurship trip and  Ocean Choice International sponsoring our Student Wellness Trip. Please note: teachers who teach Grade 7 may be asked to cover a chaperoning teachers class. Stand by. 

2) Tutor Work Experience Program: Baccalieu Collegiate is looking for a former graduate to attend the school and support students and teachers in the final weeks of schooling this year. The opportunity is paid by grant money including 210 hours of work at $15.60/hr. This is a very rewarding opportunity for the tutor, students, teachers, and school. Please reach out to Mr. Saxby or any of the staff if you are interested. 

3) School Council: We will have a School Council meeting Tuesday, June 4th 2024 at 6:15pm

4) BCP Year-End School Outing: Baccalieu school is planning a year end field trip during the last week of school on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. We will be taking our students to St. John's for the day to celebrate another successful year and to promote positive community and well-being. Please complete the following form and send in the money to respective homeroom teacher before June 7th 2024 --  Year-End School Outing Permission Form

5) Close Out/Reporting Day: There will be no school for students on Friday, June 14th 2024 to allow teachers to finalize their Reports. 

6) Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Day: On Monday, June 17th Baccalieu will be hosting a Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Day in the morning. 

7) Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Banquet: On Monday, June 17th Baccalieu will be hosting a Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Banquet in the afternoon. 

8) Family Announcement: For your information (FYI) Confronting an Epidemic of Drug Use in Schools. The following report is based out of America but might be of use for informing families on what is going on in schools across North America. Baccalieu Collegiate will remain committed to combating such an epidemic. Knowledge is power. 

9) Important Memo:  Naloxone Kits Added to First-Aid Response Package for Schools with Junior High and Senior High Grades. We must acknowledge that "young Canadians aged 15-24 are the fastest growing population requiring hospital care from opioid overdoses. People in our province have experienced opioid related harms, and these issues affect both urban and rural populations."

11) Study Hall: A reminder that Study Hall is every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-4pm.  Support from students and teachers are available. Don't be shy. Come to the Study Hall!

12) Important Allergy Reminder:This is a reminder to our school community that we have people in the school who have scent allergies. Please do not wear strong scents to school as it affects a person's health. Additionally, please do not bring in fish, shellfish, eggs, or nuts. Thank-you. 

13) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Senior Girls Volleyball: Huge Huge congrats to our Senior Girls Volleyball Team and Emma Bursey for their NLVA nominations for SR. HIGH TEAM OF THE YEAR and ROBBIE WEST MEMORIAL AWARD – Senior High Player of the Year, respectively! Congrats Coaches Alan Ash and Ewan Penny! 

  • PROM: Congratulations to our Grade 12 Prom students! Thank-you teachers and staff for putting so much time and effort into organizing such a beautiful and amazing event! 

  • Intro to Track & Field @ Carbonear: If any students attended the track and field we'd love to hear about your experience! 

  • Lighthouse Crew: Huge thanks to our Lighthouse Project crew who captured our students Prom (Erin Blundon) and the Robi Botos, Larnell Lewis, & Mike Downes show at the Trinity Hall on Saturday night (Phoenix Howell)!

  • PRMA: Huge thank-you to Grade 9 students for doing their best on the Provincial Reading Math Assessment and to Ms. Pitt and our IRT staff for administering. 

  • BCP Boys Basketball: Many thank-yous to the Senior Boys Basketball Team for volunteering their time for the next three weeks (2 X week) at the Old Perlican Recreation Committee Basketball Camp for K-3 and 4-6 children. Any and all children are welcome to join in on the fun and learning.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, May 27th 2024 (DAY 4)

1) Intro to Track & Field @ Carbonear: We have plenty of athletes at Baccalieu! On Monday May 27th from 3:30pm - 5:30pm Baccalieu students are welcome to go to the Carbonear Track/Field to experience Track and Field and possibly find their niche. Monday will be an introduction to the basics of some throwing, running, and jumping events! Sessions will be put off by the Canada Games Team NL Coaches. Any athletes in the area who are interested in Track & Field are welcomed to show up to try it out! Please spread the word and encourage our boys and girls.

2) Grade 9 PRMA: Please note that all Grade 9 students must complete the Provincial Reading and Math Assessment (PRMA). The test will be administered on Wednesday, May 29th 2024. Students do not have to prepare for this assessment.  Please see poster for more information: PRMA POSTER

3) Prom + Early Dismissal: This Friday, May 31st 2024 is the big PROM for our 2024 graduating class. We will dismiss early at the end of Period 4 so that teachers may have an opportunity to attend respective graduate party invitations.

We must acknowledge that "young Canadians aged 15-24 are the fastest growing population requiring hospital care from opioid overdoses. People in our province have experienced opioid related harms, and these issues affect both urban and rural populations."

  • Baccalieu Idol: Congratulations to everyone involved in supporting and making another year's BCP Idol a huge success. In particular, thank-you to Ms. Sequeira and all of the hard working participants! Congrats to all participants including our 2024 Baccalieu Idol Alyssa Delaney! 

  • Lighthouse Crew: Huge thanks to our Lighthouse Project crew who captured all of our best Baccalieu Idol moments! 

  • Grade 7/8 Waterloo Math Contest:  Thank you to the grade 7/8 students who volunteered to write the Gauss Waterloo Math Contest on Wednesday, May 22.  Congratulations to Michael Noonan on getting the highest score in our school for grade 7, and to Nolan Squires on getting the highest score in our school for grade 8. 

  • Grade 6 Orientation: Great to see our incoming Grade 6 students! Thank-you Tricon, Perlwin, and Cabot! Thank-you Ms. Doyle for organizing this important first step. Also thank you Emma Bursey and Cameron Bursey for working with our incoming crew! 

  • Grade 10 Boys Basketball: Congrats to a great showing by our Grade 10 boys basketball team at the Ascension invitational. The group went 1-2 in play, beating Roncalli, and losing to Ascension and Laval by a combined 14 points. 

  • Staff Meeting: Thank-you teachers!

1) Family Reminder// Attendance: As partners in your child's education journey, we want to take a moment to emphasize the crucial role that school attendance plays in their overall success and development. Regular attendance at school is more than just a routine -- it's a cornerstone of academic achievement and personal growth including: 1) Learning Opportunities, 2) Building Relationships 3) Developing Responsibility, 4) Preparation for the Future, 5) Legal Responsibility. Did you know that when you receive a phone call at the end of the day indicating your son/daughter had an absenteeism, that means your son/daughter has a late unexcused or unexcused absence? If you receive this call check your son/daughter's Powerschool attendance to see what happened so that you can correct the behaviour immediately. If late was excusable, it would be. An unexcused absence from a class, means the student skipped class. Attendance must be addressed by the family as it is a family responsibility to ensure. Make sure you're setting your children up for success, now and in the future.

3) EF Tour: There is an important meeting this Thursday, May 16th 2024 at 7pm for all Caregivers of students interested  in travelling to Switzerland and Italy as part of an EF tour during Easter 2026. You will need to use the QR code found on EF Tour POSTER if your child is interested in going. Even if you cannot make the meeting you should indicate that using the QR code. Information on the tour will be sent to you following the meeting if you have completed the form associated with the QR code. Hope to see you there. 

4) School Close out: Please note that we have planned a BCP Close out on Friday, May 17th 2024 for School Development. Students will have the day off.

  • 4) Spring Fling Dance: Thank-you to everyone involved in setting up the Spring Fling dance for our students and including Leadership students and staff! We hope everyone had fun! 

  • Grade 7 Girls Volleyball: Congrats on an excellent showing this past weekend in Torbay! 
  • Staff Meeting: Thank-you teachers for all the amazing work! It's amazing the level of compassion and value that each teacher at Baccalieu has for every single student. 
  • Lion's Club Junior High Speak Out: Huge thanks to our local Lions Club, Junior High students participants included: Michael Noonan, Zoe Barnes, Gia Delaney, Emily Snelgrove, Ross Parsons, Mya Noonan. 1st place - Mya Noonan, 2nd place - Gia Delaney, 3rd place - Emily Snelgrove. Congrats to everyone for their amazing showing!

  • Cadets ACR: Congrats to our Baccalieu Cadet community for all their success during this past ACR! Way to go!

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, May 6th 2024 (DAY 4)

                                              Updates and Important Information

1) Family Update: Did you know that when you receive a phone call at the end of the day indicating your son/daughter had an absenteeism, that means your son/daughter has a late unexcused or unexcused absence? If you receive this call check your son/daughter's Powerschool attendance to see what happened so that you can correct the behaviour immediately. If late was excusable, it would be. An unexcused absence from a class, means the student skipped class. Attendance must be addressed by the family as it is a family responsibility to ensure. Make sure you're setting your children up for success, now and in the future. Hold the fort on attendance -- it's the most importance. 

2) Lion's Club Junior High Speak Out: The Junior High Lion's Club Speak-Out will take place on May 7th, at 7:00PM 2024 at Baccalieu Collegiate. Participating students are asked to arrive between 6:30 and 6:45PM.

3) Cadets ACR: Good luck to all of our Students participating in the Cadets program in our community who will be participating in their ACR this Wednesday, May 8th 2024 at Baccalieu Collegiate. 

4) Spring Fling Dance: This Thursday, May 9th 2024 starting at 7pm to 9pm is a BCP Dance for our students! Please ensure you review BCP Dance Rules and Guidelines. Baccalieu Dances are a privilege, not a right.

  • Drama Troupe Fundraising: Thank-you to everyone who supported the Drama Troupe's trip to Provincials! Congratulations to 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place winners of the Troupes Fundraising Draw. 

  • Grade 7 Girls Volleyball: Congrats to our Grade 7 Girls Volleyball team who placed second at the Juniper Ridge Intermediate Invitational tournament this weekend. Go Predators!
  • Staff Meeting: Thank-you teachers for all the amazing work! It's amazing the level of compassion and value that each teacher at Baccalieu has for every single student. 
  • Drama Troupe: Congrats to the Drama Troupe for a very successful Provincial Drama trip! Awards are done differently at the festival, fewer awards given out. Emma Bursey received an Acting award for our play (only one award given for acting per school), we received best Tech Team (Jessica Slade and Claira Penny, thanks Coach Cody) and we also received Best Set Design.  The trip was an amazing experience and our play was in “ league of its own” according to another drama coach that Ms. Reid spoke to! So overall it was a very rewarding, memorable experience for everyone and our students had a blast! We are very proud!!!

  • BCP Basketball: Thank-you to players who showed up for our first ever Baccalieu open run last Tuesday! Thank-you and props to all players focused on offseason training. 

  • School Council Meeting: Thank-you School Council for your commitment and representation! Thank-you for another important meeting.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, April 29th 2024 (DAY 13)

                                            Updates and Important Information

1) Drama Troupe Fundraising: Thank you for your continued support. As part of our Drama's fundraising efforts for upcoming Provincial competition in Corner Brook we will be selling tickets on three prizes: a print, a gift card tree, and a Montreal and Toronto banner. Tickets cost 2.00 each or 3 for 5.00. Stay tuned for more information and how you can get your tickets! Also, please be reminded that on Tuesday, April 23rd 2024 the troupe will be performing their play along with special music performances! See our Baccalieu Collegiate  facebook for more details! 

2) School Council Meeting: We will have our school council meeting Tuesday, April 30th 2024 starting at 6:30pm

3) Drama Troupe: Big upcoming trip for our Senior Drama Troupe who are en route to Corner Brook to represent Baccalieu and the Avalon West region at the Provincial Tournament. Thank-you for all the dedication and thanks for all of the amazing support!! Good luck Go BCP Go!

7) Student Accomodations at Memorial: In case you're exploring an overnight opportunity for a student trip or gathering, have a look at Memorial's Accommodation package

8) Important Allergy Reminder:This is a reminder to our school community that we have people in the school who have scent allergies. Please do not wear strong scents to school as it affects a person's health. Additionally, please do not bring in fish, shellfish, eggs, or nuts. Thank-you. 

9) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Do not order a shirt with a number without consulting directly with your coach. BCP Athletic shirts are a quality low cost option for short term sports teams.   • Homeroom Pictures: Thank-you Ms. Slade and all participants organizing our homeroom yearbook pictures Monday afternoon. Thank-you!

  • Red House Monster: Thank-you to the The Red House Monster production crew and all the community support regarding the last performance at the school Tuesday, April 23rd 2024 at Baccalieu Collegiate and before their provincial trip to Corner Brook this weekend. Big thanks to Amity, Adya and Trevor for supporting the show with amazing music!

  • Splash Centre Grow-up Program: Thank-you Ms. LeShane and all the Career Education students for participating in the Splash Centre program. Thank-you Ms. Janine Simmons all everyone at the Splash Centre for providing the opportunity.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, April 22nd 2024 (DAY 8)

 Dear Families,

                                          Updates and Important Information

1) Splash Centre Grow-up Program: On Monday, April 22 and Tuesday, April 23 our Career Education Students will travel offsite for their programming. Bus departs school at 9:00am and is expected to arrive in Harbour Grace between 10:00 and 10:30 for start time. They will leave Harbour Grace at 1:30 to be back to school for the afternoon bus home. Students can bring snacks and a refillable water bottle. We are providing lunch, but they can bring a lunch of their own if they wish. Students who are doing the cooking lesson will be making tacos for their lunch, and those who are not doing that until the next day will be provided lunch from Subway. (If there are any dietary issues or allergies, please let me know and I will make sure to accommodate!)  Cooking, cleaning, and laundry will take place at BelleView Manor Inn and presented by the inn workers and myself. Sexual Health will take place at the SPLASH Centre presented by Planned Parenthood NL. (This will cover a variety of topics, such as consent, STI's, protection from STI's and pregnancy, etc.) Car Care and Maintenance Organization will be presented by SPLASH staff at the centre, and the Telephone skills is an online presentation from CSCNL. 

2) 2024-25 Course Selection:  The following course selection form is for students currently in Grades 9, 10, and 11 to complete. Please read the instructions carefully. This form lays out all Grade 10-12 course options. Please choose grade appropriate and program appropriate selections.  Also, please note the form lays out all Grades courses to provide students a general idea of courses over the next three years for planning purposes. Form: 2024-25 Graduation Program Course Selection. Deadline for completion is Tuesday, April 23rd 2024. Please complete the selection as if final however there could be another updated selection form sent out again depending on resource allocation. 

3) Red House Monster: The Provincial Qualifying BCP Drama Production: The Red House Monster is being performed Tuesday, April 23rd 2024 at Baccalieu Collegiate at 7pm. It will be a show to remember with other musical performances including Amity, Adya & Trevor.

  • Grates Cove Studio Field Trip: Thank-you to Grates Cove Studio and 7 Fathoms for hosting a tremendous learning experience for our Nutrition class. They touched on a lot of things- growing an idea into a business, pivoting and adapting as conditions change, seaweed and how this connects to overall health, economic development opportunities in rural Newfoundland, etc.  

  • Horizon's Student Leadership Conference: Huge thank-you to Ms. Noel and all the students who attended this leadership conference! 

  • Grade 11 Boys Basketball: Congrats to the Gr. 9-11 Boys Basketball for an excellent showing this past weekend at Carbonear Collegiate. 

  • Ball Hockey: Huge thanks to Mr. Fudge and Mr. Foley for making ball hockey happen at Baccalieu! Congrats to the players! Congrats on being the Regional Qualifier hosts!
