Thank you for taking a look at this week’s announcements from Baccalieu Collegiate. Please take a few minutes to review the updates for important reminders, upcoming events, and useful school information.

Updates and Important Information

1. Cafeteria Services this week
   
   Cafeteria services will resume on Wednesday, May 20th.  
   
   
2. Junior Boys NLBA Provincials
   Congratulations to our Junior Boys Basketball team on representing Baccalieu Collegiate at the NLBA Provincials hosted at our school this past weekend. A sincere thank you goes out to our coaches, Athletic Director, volunteers, and everyone else who helped make the tournament a success. We are proud of the effort, sportsmanship, and school spirit shown throughout the weekend!
   
   
3. Don and Patsy Quinlan Baccalieu Award for Grade 12 Students
   The Don and Patsy Quinlan Baccalieu Award is pleased to be continuing again in 2026.  This is a monetary award going to a grade 12 student who will be continuing their education in a post-secondary institution in the fall.  For information on the Background, Criteria, Requirements, and Nomination Process, please see the following link.  The deadline to apply is June 8th, 2026.  Link for Google Form
   
   
4. Year-End Field Trip Form
   There was a Google Form sent to students by their homeroom teachers.  We would like students to fill out the form to give us an idea of how many buses we will need and to make reservations at the places students want to go for our year-end field trip.
   
   
5. Road Safety
   Please have a conversation with your child(ren) if they walk to or from Gasland at lunch about road safety.  It's been brought to the school's attention that students are walking in the middle of the road at lunchtime, and we want to ensure they follow smart pedestrian practices for their safety and the safety of drivers.
   
   
6. Final Stretch!
   There is now less than 1 month until exams begin.  We would like to encourage students to continue to stay on top of their work and begin to think about and organize for final exams.  
   
   
7. Keeping our Community Clean
   Please have a conversation with your child regarding putting their waste in a garbage bin, on or off school property.  We're all a part of the community and want to ensure that we keep it in good condition.  So, whether it's driving down to the wharf, walking to Gasland, or just hanging out at school during lunchtime, please respect our surroundings and put garbage where it belongs.  
   
   
8. Attendance 
   Regular attendance is essential for students to learn from their teachers, connect with peers, and build important skills. Whether it’s a full day or a partial one, being present at school should be a priority.
   
   
9. 25th Anniversary Committee
   September 2027 will mark the 25th anniversary of Baccalieu Collegiate’s opening! We are planning to celebrate this milestone and would welcome members of the school community who are interested in helping plan and organize the event. If you would like to be involved, please email baccalieucoll@nlesd.ca
   
   
10. Prepared for Class
    Students are expected to come to class prepared each day with all required materials, including pencils, notebooks, and their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be charged, and students should have their chargers with them.
    
    
11. Extra Curricular Schedule
    Baccalieu Collegiate offers extracurricular activities, including sports, drama, tutoring/study hall, DND, and more!  
    
    
12. Absence / Sign-In / Sign-Out (Family)
    Attendance is critical for academic and social success, as it ensures that students are actively engaged and able to fully benefit from the educational opportunities we provide. Please make sure that you sign your child in and out when arriving late or leaving early.
    
    
13. Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program
    There are still spots available for volunteers for our KES Breakfast Program.  Anyone interested, please contact Ms. LeShane at marleneleshane@nlschools.ca.

17. School Allergies
    Please be aware that certain foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies. We have students who may require an EpiPen if exposed to the listed allergens.  There are also people at the school with scent allergies, so please be mindful of this.
    
    
18. Cannabis and Smoke Free Policy
    Please note Baccalieu Collegiate and the District support a Tobacco, Cannabis, Smoke and Smokeless Free Policy. This policy also prohibits clothing that promotes these products. District Policy Document
    
    
19. Doorways
    Doorways School Counselling Program is at Baccalieu Collegiate every Wednesday. If you would like your child to speak with the counsellor, please contact the school, or your child can pop by the office.

1. Grades 7/8 Waterloo Math Contest
   
   The grades 7/8 Waterloo Math Contests will be written on Thursday, May 14, during lunch in Mrs. Slade's classroom.  Any students who are interested and haven't already signed up should speak to Mrs. Slade by the end of the school day on Monday, May 11.
   
   
2. Senior Boys NLBA Provincials
   Our Senior Boys Basketball team travelled to Corner Brook this past weekend to compete in the NLBA Provincials. The boys represented Baccalieu Collegiate well throughout the tournament and battled their way to the semi-finals against strong competition. Congratulations to the team and coaches on a great effort and for the determination they showed throughout.
   
   
3. Victoria Day Long Weekend
   Just a reminder that this upcoming weekend will be a long weekend for Victoria Day.  Students will return to school on Tuesday, May 19th (day 9 of the cycle).
   
   
4. Local Accommodations
   Do you have a house available to rent to teams that come to Baccalieu Collegiate for tournaments? Please reach out ASAP so that we can add you to our list.  We have already included the Airbnb locations that are listed, as well as BnB and motels in the area.  Anything extra would be great to add as well.

   Our Jr. Boys Basketball team competed this weekend in our 1st Annual Brandon Harris Memorial Tournament, representing our school with effort, sportsmanship, and pride! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our team and our school, we appreciate it.

   Please have a conversation with your child regarding putting their waste in a garbage bin, on or off school property.  We're all a part of the community and want to ensure that we keep it in good condition.  So, whether it's driving down to the wharf, walking to Gasland, or just hanging out at school during lunchtime, please respect our surroundings and put garbage where it belongs.

Please note that mandating its use is an NLSchools decision, not a school-level decision: “Effective November 1, 2025, the use of Rycor Online Payment System is mandatory for the collection of all School Generated Funds.” (Rycor Usage Protocol - NLSchools, 2025)
   
   To help, I’ve created a short Google Slideshow that shows how to access Rycor and locate school forms and fees: Rycor Slideshow. If you need assistance, please contact the school.

   This week, there will be no school for students on Friday, May 1st; staff have a PL day.
   
   
2. Baccalieu Idol
   Fantastic job by all students who took part in this year's Baccalieu Idol!  Congratulations to Sophia Bishop for being chosen by the judges as the top performer Baccalieu Idol Winner, and for being chosen by the majority of the audience for the Audience Choice Performance.  A special thank you to Ms. Sequeira for all of the time and effort it took to organize and put on this great event!

1. Final Stretch!
   It's great that we're finally starting to see the end of winter and getting longer days with warmer weather.  That also means that we're on our final stretch to finishing the 25-26 school year.  It's important that students continue to stay on top of their work and keep in mind that there is less than 2 months of school before final exams.
   
   
2. Homeroom Pictures
   Homeroom pictures for the yearbook will be taken on Wednesday, April 22nd, during period 1!  Level 3 students are reminded to wear grad hoodies for these pictures.
   
   
3. SSNL Avalon Boys Junior Varsity Basketball Championship
   Congratulations to the junior high boys' basketball team for capturing the gold medal and championship banner in the Avalon Junior Varsity Basketball tournament! The boys played outstanding basketball throughout the tournament and represented the school with pride and sportsmanship. A special congratulations to Spencer Coish, who was named tournament MVP.
   
   
4. 2026-27 Course Selection Form
   For students in grades 9, 10, and 11, please pass in your course selection sheet if you have not already done so; it was due before Easter.
   
   
5. Baccalieu Idol
   Baccalieu Collegiate will be having our annual Baccalieu Idol on Thursday, April 23rd.  Come celebrate and enjoy our many talented students as they take the stage!
   
   
6. Attendance 
   Students are expected to attend school, even on partial days, as classes will continue as scheduled.  Classes are critical opportunities for learning, and students should take full advantage of them. In cases of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to connect with their teacher and stay up to date with any missed work.
   
   
7. School Development Surveys
   This is the last week to complete school development surveys!  If you haven't already done so, please complete the survey using the link below.  Surveys help us gather perspectives on what we're doing well and what we can focus on to improve as a school community.

1. 2026-27 Course Selection Form
   For students in grades 9, 10, and 11, please pass in your course selection form by Monday, March 30th, if you haven't already done so.

   Just a reminder that students will not have school from Friday, April 3rd to Sunday, April 12th (inclusive).  Have a Safe and Happy Easter break!

   Congratulations to the Grade 7/8 girls’ volleyball team on an outstanding performance at this weekend’s tournament at Persalvic!  From exciting rallies to strong teamwork on the court, the players showed incredible effort, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the event.
   
   
4. Boys Ball Hockey Qualifier
   Come cheer on our Boys' Ball Hockey Team as they compete at home on Tuesday. Games begin at 3; $2 at the door.
   
   
5. Baccalieu Idol
   Baccalieu Collegiate will be having our annual Baccalieu Idol on Thursday, April 23rd.  Come celebrate and enjoy our many talented students as they take the stage!
   
   
6. Attendance 
   Students are expected to attend school, even on partial days, as classes will continue as scheduled.  Classes are critical opportunities for learning, and students should take full advantage of them. In cases of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to connect with their teacher and stay up to date with any missed work.

   This is the last week to complete school development surveys!  If you haven't already done so, please complete the survey using the link below.  Surveys help us gather perspectives on what we're doing well and what we can focus on to improve as a school community.

8. 25th Anniversary Committee
   September 2027 will mark the 25th anniversary of Baccalieu Collegiate’s opening! We are planning to celebrate this milestone and would welcome members of the school community who are interested in helping plan and organize the event. If you would like to be involved, please email baccalieucoll@nlesd.ca
   
   
9. Parking at School
   Please do not park in the wheelchair spaces right in front of the building unless you have a vehicle permit to do so.  We want to ensure that visitors who require that parking have access to it.  Thank you.
   
   
10. How to use Rycor for Fees and Forms
    Some families may be unfamiliar with or unsure about using Rycor. Please note that mandating its use is an NLSchools decision, not a school-level decision: “Effective November 1, 2025, the use of Rycor Online Payment System is mandatory for the collection of all School Generated Funds.” (Rycor Usage Protocol - NLSchools, 2025)

11. Prepared for Class
    Students are expected to come to class prepared each day with all required materials, including pencils, notebooks, and their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be charged, and students should have their chargers with them.
    
    
12. Tutoring for Tuition
    Tutoring for Tuition is now available. If you feel your child would benefit from extra academic support, please reach out to Mrs. Reid or Mrs. Slade to get started. We’re happy to help students build confidence and strengthen their learning.
    
    
13. Extra Curricular Schedule
    Baccalieu Collegiate offers extracurricular activities, including sports, drama, tutoring/study hall, DND, and more!  
    
    
14. Absence / Sign-In / Sign-Out (Family)
    Attendance is critical for academic and social success, as it ensures that students are actively engaged and able to fully benefit from the educational opportunities we provide. Please make sure that you sign your child in and out when arriving late or leaving early.
    
    
15. Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program
    We are looking for additional volunteers for our KES Breakfast Program.  Anyone interested, please contact Ms. LeShane at marleneleshane@nlschools.ca.

17. 295 Baccalieu Sea Cadets
    The 295 Baccalieu Sea Cadets would love to welcome new members! Cadets meet every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the school. It’s a great opportunity for youth to build skills, make friends, and get involved in their community.

19. School Allergies
    Please be aware that certain foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies. We have students who may require an EpiPen if exposed to the listed allergens.  There are also people at the school with scent allergies, so please be mindful of this.
    
    
20. Cannabis and Smoke Free Policy
    Please note Baccalieu Collegiate and the District support a Tobacco, Cannabis, Smoke and Smokeless Free Policy. This policy also prohibits clothing that promotes these products. District Policy Document

Happy Spring!  Thank you for reviewing this week’s announcements from Baccalieu Collegiate. Please take a moment to go through the updates for important reminders, upcoming events, and helpful school information.

Updates and Important Information

1. EF Trip Meeting
   For the parents/guardians of students going on the EF tour to Switzerland and Italy, there is a meeting on Monday, March 23rd, at 6pm at the school.
   
   
2. Lion's Club Zone Speak Out
   Addison Rice and Mya Noonan represented Baccalieu Collegiate last week at the Lions Club Zone Speak Out, and both did an outstanding job! A special congratulations to Addison, who placed first and will now advance to the District Speak Out in Gander this April.
   
   
3. Grade 9 Girls Spring Showdown Volleyball Tournament
   Congratulations to the Grade 9 girls’ volleyball team on an outstanding performance at this weekend’s Spring Showdown, earning the silver medal! Your teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship were evident throughout the tournament.
   
   
4. Junior Boys Basketball Games
   The junior boys' basketball team competed this weekend and represented Baccalieu Collegiate with great effort and sportsmanship. The team showed strong teamwork and determination throughout their games. Well done to all players for their hard work and commitment on the court!
