Updates and Important Information

1. Term 2 Ending Soon
   Friday, March 13th, is a Report Card/PL day for staff and Monday, March 16th, is a day off for all schools.  Report Cards will be given to students for Term 2 on Wednesday, March 18th.  Family-teacher conferences will take place on Thursday, March 19th.  
   
   
2. School Development Surveys
   School Development Surveys are filled out every year by students, parents, and staff.  It allows the various members of our school community to voice their opinions on what we're doing well, and helps guide us in making improvements.  Please take a couple of minutes to complete the school development survey below.

3. DramaFest
   Our Junior Drama Troupe will perform on Thursday, March 5, at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Senior Drama Troupe at 2:30 p.m., at the Sheila Nageira Theatre in Carbonear. Best of luck to all of our performers, and we encourage anyone available to come out and support them!
   
   
4. 18U NLVA Provincial Volleyball Championship
   Congrats to the Predators Volleyball team on getting to the semi-finals in Tier 1 this weekend.  They played hard, with determination, and above all, represented the school with excellent sportsmanship.  Congrats to Stephanie LeShane on being selected as one of the Tournament All-Stars. Let's Go BCP!
   
   
5. Senior Boys Basketball Tournament - Baltimore
   Our Senior Boys Basketball team demonstrated strong effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout their tournament this weekend in Baltimore. Keep up the good work!
   
   
6. Parking at School
   Please do not park in the wheelchair spaces right in front of the building unless you have a vehicle permit to do so.  We want to ensure that visitors who require that parking have access to it.  Thank you.
   
   
7. Carnival Week
   Thank you to the staff and students who planned and took part in last week's Carnival Week!  Staff and students had a great time and had fun!
   
   
8. How to use Rycor for Fees and Forms
   Some families may be unfamiliar with or unsure about using Rycor. Please note that mandating its use is an NLSchools decision, not a school-level decision: “Effective November 1, 2025, the use of Rycor Online Payment System is mandatory for the collection of all School Generated Funds.” (Rycor Usage Protocol - NLSchools, 2025)

9. 25th Anniversary Committee
   September 2027 will be the 25th anniversary of Baccalieu Collegiate's opening.  We're looking to celebrate this milestone, and would love to have members of the school community involved in planning and putting the plan into action.  If you're interested, please email baccalieucoll@nlesd.ca.
   
   
10. Prepared for Class
    Students are expected to come to class prepared each day with all required materials, including pencils, notebooks, and their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be charged, and students should have their chargers with them.
    
    
11. Tutoring for Tuition
    Tutoring for Tuition is now available. If you feel your child would benefit from extra academic support, please reach out to Mrs. Reid or Mrs. Slade to get started. We’re happy to help students build confidence and strengthen their learning.
    
    
12. Extra Curricular Schedule
    Baccalieu Collegiate offers extracurricular activities, including sports, drama, tutoring/study hall, DND, and more!  Please check our Calendar and our Facebook page for schedules.
    
    
13. Absence / Sign-In / Sign-Out (Family)
    Attendance is critical for academic and social success, as it ensures that students are actively engaged and able to fully benefit from the educational opportunities we provide. Please make sure that you sign your child in and out when arriving late or leaving early.
    
    
14. Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program
    We are looking for additional volunteers for our KES Breakfast Program.  Anyone interested, please contact Ms. LeShane at marleneleshane@nlschools.ca.

    The 295 Baccalieu Sea Cadets would love to welcome new members! Cadets meet every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the school. It’s a great opportunity for youth to build skills, make friends, and get involved in their community.

18. School Allergies
    Please be aware that certain foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies. We have students who may require an EpiPen if exposed to the listed allergens.  There are also people at the school with scent allergies, so please be mindful of this.
    
    
19. Cannabis and Smoke Free Policy
    Please note Baccalieu Collegiate and the District support a Tobacco, Cannabis, Smoke and Smokeless Free Policy. This policy also prohibits clothing that promotes these products. District Policy Document

1. Midterm Exam Rewrites
   We are almost done with the midterm exam rewrites! 🤞 The last set of exams is Science 9, Biology 2201, and Biology 3201.  They will be written on the first day we return to school (tentatively Tuesday, February 24th); if there is a delayed opening due to weather, they will be in the afternoon.
   
   
2. Drama Performance February 26th
   Join us for an evening of entertainment as our junior and senior drama troupes take the stage on Thursday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. The night will also feature a performance by Baccalieu Idol winner, Brooklyn Power. We’d love to see you there supporting our talented students. Admission is $5 at the door.
   
   
3. White Hills Field Trip
   We’re excited to share that we are planning a ski/snowboard trip to White Hills this year! This opportunity will be offered to high school students first. If we do not reach bus capacity, it will then be opened to younger grades. Full details, including permission and payment information, are available through Rycor.
   
   
4. School Development Surveys

   This week, February 24-27th, is Carnival week at Baccalieu Collegiate!  Theme days count towards points for Winter Carnival.

6. Grade 9 Girls Volleyball Invitational Tournament
   Congratulations to the Junior Girls Volleyball team, who competed in the Grade 9 Girls Volleyball Invitational Tournament this past weekend and earned Tier 1 bronze!  Keep up the good work.
   
   
7. 20th Annual David Emberley Senior Boys Basketball Tournament
   Excellent effort and sportsmanship shown by the Senior Boys Basketball Team this past weekend in Mobile.  Keep up the good work!

1. Midterm Exam Rewrites

2. Long Weekend Ahead - February 20 & 23
   Teachers have a PL day on Friday, February 20th, and all schools have Monday, February 23rd, off for Winter Break.  So, students have a 4-day weekend coming up.
   
   
3. White Hills Field Trip
   We’re excited to share that we are planning a ski/snowboard trip to White Hills this year! This opportunity will be offered to high school students first. If we do not reach bus capacity, it will then be opened to younger grades. Full details, including permission and payment information, are available through Rycor.
   
   
4. School Development Surveys
   School Development Surveys are conducted annually to gather feedback from students, staff, and parents/guardians to inform the school development process. The survey results will be provided to our school and used with other data to identify the school’s strengths and challenges. We will then create and implement a plan to build on successes and address areas of challenge.  Parents/Guardians, please take a moment to fill out the survey using the link below, so you can share your opinions and let us know how we can continue to improve. 5. Girls 17U NLVA Provincial Volleyball Tournament
   Congrats to the 17U Girls' Volleyball Team on competing in the NLVA 17U Provincial Volleyball Championships in Clarenville this past weekend.  The girls made it to the quarter finals in tier 3 and lost a hard-fought match with a club team from Central.  They played great all weekend and showed that our athletes are excellent ambassadors for the school. Let's go BCP!
   
   
6. Empowering Parents & Educators in a Digital World (PL)
   Professor Brett Holfeld from Grenfell Campus is running two extended learning courses in the next few weeks that may be an excellent professional learning opportunity for teachers, administrators, staff, those who work with children and adolescents, as well as parents.  Please see the link below for more details.

1. Midterm Exam Rewrites
   Please complete this Google Form if you (or your child, if completed by a parent/guardian) wish to rewrite one or more midterm exams. The Assessment and Evaluation Policy from NLSchools changed last June, so rather than doing them at the end of the school year, rewrites will take place during the week of February 16–19. Students choosing to rewrite exams for grade improvement need to review and focus on areas of difficulty. 4. Girls 16U NLVA Provincial Volleyball Tournament
   Congrats to the 16U girls volleyball team on competing in the NLVA 16U Provincial Volleyball Championships in St. John's this past weekend.  With only 3 practices under their belt, they played excellent volleyball and represented the school with pride and great sportsmanship.  Congrats, girls, and onto the next one!
   
   
5. Senior Boys Basketball Regional Qualifier Tournament
   Our Senior Boys Basketball team competed this past weekend in the Qualifiers in Mobile. The team demonstrated strong teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit throughout the event. A great effort by all involved!
   
   
6. Girls' Basketball Team
   Our Girls' Basketball team is welcoming additional players as we head into upcoming games! Students interested in developing their skills, staying active, and representing the school are encouraged to connect with Mr. Regev or Ms. Sequeira and join team practices.  Provincials are coming up soon!
   
   
7. Waterloo Math Contest
   We’re excited to once again offer students the chance to participate in the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat Math Contests through the University of Waterloo. These contests are a great way for students in Grades 9–11 to challenge themselves and showcase their math skills. Interested students should contact Mrs. Slade; registration closes Tuesday, February 10, and the contests take place on February 25.

Updates and Important Information

1. Midterm Exams
   Midterm Exams are finishing this week (February 2-6). Important points:
   - If a student misses a mid-year exam, documentation is required. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the administration on a case-by-case basis (as per NLSchools AER policy).
   - In general courses, students will complete summative assessments in school during the mid-course exam period. Ms. Reid's general ELA class will be working on their mid-term assessment throughout their regularly scheduled classes of midterm week.
   - Please remind your child that students are not allowed to talk to each other during exams, even after they have completed their exam and are waiting for the class to finish. It may compromise the integrity of the exam, and talking can distract others who are still writing.
   - Classes will continue throughout the week as normally scheduled, as per NLSchools policy.

    Please be aware that certain foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies. We have students who may require an EpiPen if exposed to the listed allergens.  There are also people at the school with scent allergies, so please be mindful of this.

    Please note Baccalieu Collegiate and the District support a Tobacco, Cannabis, Smoke and Smokeless Free Policy. This policy also prohibits clothing that promotes these products. District Policy Document

Dear Families,

Thank you for taking the time to review Baccalieu Collegiate’s announcements for this week. As always, please review the updates for important reminders, upcoming events, and school information.

Updates and Important Information

1. Midterm Exams
   Midterm Exams will take place during this week (January 26–30). Important points:
   - If a student misses a mid-year exam, documentation is required. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the administration on a case-by-case basis (as per NLSchools AER policy).
   - In general courses, students will complete summative assessments in school during the mid-course exam period. Ms. Reid's general ELA class will be working on their mid-term assessment throughout their regularly scheduled classes of midterm week.
   - Please remind your child that students are not allowed to talk to each other during exams, even after they have completed their exam and are waiting for the class to finish. It may compromise the integrity of the exam, and talking can distract others who are still writing.
   - Classes will continue throughout the week as normally scheduled, as per NLSchools policy.  
   - If school is closed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, any exams scheduled for that day will be rescheduled to take place during the week of February 2-6. Any changes will be communicated as early as possible. Just in case, students should bring home their study material every evening this week.

2. Prepared for Class
   Students are expected to come to class prepared each day with all required materials, including pencils, notebooks, and their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be charged, and students should have their chargers with them.
   
   
3. Drama Club Hoodies
   Drama hoodies are available for purchase online using the following link: https://star-creations.ca/collections/baccalieu-collegiate-clothing. Orders were due January 23, so if you have not already done so, please place your order asap.
   
   
4. White Hills Field Trip
   We’re excited to share that we are planning a ski/snowboard trip to White Hills this year! This opportunity will be offered to high school students first. If we do not reach bus capacity, it will then be opened to younger grades. Full details, including permission and payment information, are available through Rycor.
   
   
5. Tutoring for Tuition
   Tutoring for Tuition is now available. If you feel your child would benefit from extra academic support, please reach out to Mrs. Reid or Mrs. Slade to get started. We’re happy to help students build confidence and strengthen their learning.
   
   
6. Lost & Found
   Our lost and found table by the gym entrance is nearly overflowing.  If your child(ren) is missing any clothing, that'd be a good first place to check.
   
   
7. Extra Curricular Schedule
   Baccalieu Collegiate offers extracurricular activities, including sports, drama, tutoring/study hall, DND, and more!  Please check our Calendar and our Facebook page for schedules.

4. Block on the Rock - Volleyball
   Congratulations to the Grade 9 Girls Volleyball team on winning the silver medal at Block on the Rock! We are very proud of your great effort and excellent play throughout the tournament. Your teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination were outstanding.
   
   
5. Winter Freeze Advance Auto Invitational Tournament - Basketball 
   Congratulations to the Senior Boys Basketball team, who competed in Carbonear this past weekend. The team demonstrated excellent effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Great job, all!
