BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, November 25th 2024 (DAY 1)

 Dear Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. CONGRATS to our Senior Girls Volleyball team for taking the SSNL Regional Qualifier Banner again! They're on to Provincials again! Great work team!                                    Updates and Important Information

1) Lighthouse Project Livestream: Members of the Lighthouse Project will have a Livestream to broadcast the weekly update to staff and students on Monday, November 25, 2024. The broadcast will begin during the Home Room period. 

2) School Council: BCP School Council Meeting is Monday, November 18th 2024 at 4pm

3) Drama practice this week:  Drama practice this week will be regular time- Monday and Thursday from 3pm-4pm.

4) After School Tutoring: Mr. Holloway's after school tutoring will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:00 to 4:00pm. 

5) Junior High Math Competition: Wednesday, November 27th 2024 is BCP Annual Junior High Math Competition. Get ready to crunch some numbers!  The gym will be closed during lunch time on Wednesday Nov. 27th due to the Junior High Math Competition.

6) Badminton Club: Badminton for Sr high students will be after school on Wednesday until 4:30. Badminton for Jr high students will be on Thursday after school on Thursday until 4:00. ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME!

7) Career Education 2202 Students: Career students will be attending the Career Fair Thursday, November 28 at Splash Centre Harbour Grace. This is part of the Grow Up Program that is offered by the Splash Centre. The will be Bus leaving at 8:45am and returning at 1:30pm so students can get the bus home in the afternoon. There is no cost to the students for this trip! Lunch is provided. 

8) Senior Boys Basketball: The BCP Senior Boys team will play their AEBL second regular season game vs. Ascension Astros this Thursday, November 28th 2024. Tip off 6:30pm! Come out and support if you can!

10) Term 1 End: Just a reminder that Term 1 end is near! The last day of school before Term 1 ends for students is Thursday, November 28th 2024. Finish the term strong!

11) BCP PL Close Out & Reporting Day: Baccalieu Collegiate will be shutdown for teachers learning and reporting Friday, November 29th 2024

13) Baccalieu Collegiate Cash Lottery: Keep up with the sales! Now's the time to take the lead in sales. Cash Lottery ticket sales continue for the lucky ticket holders an opportunity to win $5000, $500, and/or $50! The BCP Cash Lottery is a school fundraising for flexible seating in our classrooms, stage lights, and to support our extracurricular activities. Cash Lottery Poster

14) BCP Family - Teacher Conferences: Baccalieu Collegiate Family-Teacher Conference will be Thursday, December 5th 2024 from 1pm to 5pm.  

15) Scott Legge and the Lighthouse: FYI Scott Legge will be attending our school on Thursday, December 5th and Friday, December 6th 2024 to continue training our students in the Lighthouse project. We will have a full crew attend and cover the Christmas Concert held in North River which raises money for the Janeway. We will also have representation to support coverage at Trinity Hall which includes working with the NTV News Crew! Any students interested in joining the Lighthouse crew should reach out to Mr. Atakorah. It's an amazing opportunity to learn new skills and gain confidence promoting the amazing things happening at our school and in our communities. 

16) Tournament at Brookside intermediate: Grade 9 girls volleyball will be attending a tournament at Brookside Intermediate on December 6th and 7th.

18) Sports: Believe it or not, there's more sports and activities happening at Baccalieu! Please see the Baccalieu Events Calendar for up-to-date practice times and tournaments.

20) Reminder -- Absence Form (Family): Child Absent? Complete the form BCP ABSENT FORM without having to call or email the respective homeroom teacher. You can do that too. 

21) Assessment Support Calendar: Please do your best to add assessments to our Assessment Support Calendar. This calendar is shared on our www.baccalieucollegiate.ca site for both students and families to see and support their organization. Additionally, give our IRT team a heads up at your earliest convenience so that they can mobilize effectively to support. 


22) School Allergies: Please be aware that the following foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies including nuts, fish, shellfish, egg, and pumpkin. 

23) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Do not order a shirt with a number without consulting directly with your coach. BCP Athletic shirts are a quality low cost option for short term sports teams. Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Huge win at Regional Volleyball Tournament: Huge Congratulations to the Baccalieu Collegiate Senior Girls Volleyball team on winning the regionals held at Roncalli High School. They played hard, had fun and sportsmanship was above and beyond. Next stop in two weeks is Provincials in Glovertown. Also congrats to Abbigail Penny on being selected as tournament MVP. 3,2,1 BCP!
  • Harm Reduction Sessions: Huge thanks to Jane Henderson, the Provincial Consultant for Harm Reduction with NL Health Services. Her expertise and support for our students' understanding of drugs is greatly appreciated. Please see MEMO: Baccalieu Collegiate Harm Reduction Sessions  for further context. 
  • Boy's Indoor Soccer: Congratulations to the Boy's Indoor Soccer Team on a great showing at the regional qualifiers at Crescent Collegiate this past weekend. The boy's played hard and represented our school well! Great job guys!

  • Shawna Squires-Alter: Way-to-go Shawna Squires on a rocking show this past weekend!
  • Sr. Boys Basketball: Sr. Boys Basketball fell to Carbonear Collegiate in League play last Saturday. 
  • Avalon Senior High Math League: Thank-you to all the students who joined the BCP Math League Team!!! Thank-you Mr. Holloway and Ms. Slade to provide the opportunity!
  • Drama practice for Christmas Concert: Thank-you teachers and students for working overtime so we have put on a fantastic Christmas concert!
  • Baccalieu Badminton Club: Thank-you Ms. Oliver for giving opportunity to students to play competitive or non-competitive badminton at Baccalieu.

1) Harm Reduction Sessions: Baccalieu Collegiate students will have a one hour presentation from Jane Henderson with their respective homeroom on Monday, November 18th 2024. Jane Henderson is the Provincial Consultant for Harm Reduction with NL Health Services. Please see MEMO: Baccalieu Collegiate Harm Reduction Sessions  for further context. 

3) Drama Practice: There will be drama practice 4-5 on Monday and Thursday this week. Monday's practice will follow choir practice.

3) School Council: BCP School Council Meeting is Monday, November 18th 2024 at 4pm

5) Graduation Photos: Lifetouch will be at Baccalieu next week Thursday, November 21 and Friday, November 22 2024 to take Grade 12 Graduation photos. All students should take their photos so that they are in the Baccalieu Collegiate composite. Students are not required to pay the sitting fee unless they purchase the proofs. 

6) Indoor Soccer: There will be a boy's indoor soccer practice on Thursday from 3-4pm. This is the last practice before the regional qualifier tournament. Please make every effort to attend!

7) Shawna Squires-Alter: Shawna Squires band ALTER will be playing at Second Stage. This is an all ages venue. November 23rd. admission is $15 or P.W.Y.C. doors open at 4pm bands start at 5pm. Bands include ALTER, Kicker, Mantra, Bog Rot, Little Fauna, and Sheavy! Drop by and enjoy a great show.

1) Design and Fabrication ClassA reminder to all students enrolled in Design and Fab to please read and have your parent(s)/guardian(s) sign the safety pledge form. Please return these forms to Ms. Petten this week!

2) After School Tutoring: Mr. Holloway's after school tutoring will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:00 to 4:00pm. 

3) Boy's Indoor Soccer: There will be a short meeting on Tuesday at recess time for anyone on the boy's indoor soccer team. *Practice Change*: Practice this week will go ahead on TUESDAY from 3-4pm

4) Professional Learning Cohort: NLSchools Program Specialists will be at Baccalieu working with teachers who joined the inquiry cohort on Wednesday, November 13th 2024

5) Drama practice for Christmas ConcertThere will be practice for the Christmas concert this Wednesday and Thursday after school from 3-4. Please make every effort to be there.

6) Baccalieu Badminton ClubThe Baccalieu Badminton Club for Sr High players will go ahead after school on Wednesdays until 4:30 at Baccalieu Collegiate starting on November 13thThe Jr High players will play on Thursdays until 4:00 at Baccalieu Collegiate. This will start up when the indoor soccer practices are completed for the year. Estimated start up date is November 28th.

7) Cash Lottery Early Bird Draw: Students, bring back your sold tickets by Thursday, November 14th 2024. Every booklet sold (25 tickets) and your name goes into a draw for a $25.00 Jungle Jim's Gift Certificate!

8) Girl's Basketball: Girl's basketball practice this week will go ahead on Thursday after school from 3-4pm.

Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Senior Girls Varsity Volleyball: Big congratulations to the Senior Girls Varsity Volleyball team on winning the Division B tier one Championship this past weekend at the 8th Annual Pink invitational tournament held in memory of Makayla Puddicombe. Also congratulations to Anna Kate Sutton on being chosen as MVP of our team. These girls showed great sportsmanship for Baccalieu Collegiate by cheering for all teams this weekend. Awesome job. 
  • Jamarama Donation: Thank-you students and families for supporting Jamarama in support of Janeway. Congrats to Grade 9 and Grade 10B Homerooms for raising the most money! The school raised $131.00 total for the Janeway. 
  • Avalon Senior High Math League: Thank-you to all the students who joined the BCP Math League Team!!! Thank-you Mr. Holloway and Ms. Slade to provide the opportunity!
  • Senior Boys Basketball: Congrats to Boys basketball who had an excellent weekend in Bonavista placing 3rd out of 6 teams. Back to the lab boys!
  • Remembrance Day Assembly: Thank-you students, staff, and the public for joining us to honour Remembrance Day. Thank-you to the amazing work of staff and students and Cadets for creating such an excellent event. 
  • Drama & Music: Thank-you staff and students who prepared and performed in the Remembrance Day Assembly. Amazing job!

3) The Buzz, CDLI Updates: CDLI is excited to introduce The Buzz, CDLI’s newsletter, designed to keep you informed about all the latest happenings, updates, and resources at the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation. Whether you're a parent, student, or educator, The Buzz will bring you closer to what’s going on at CDLI and highlight important dates, events, and stories from across our learning community. Check out our first edition here: The Buzz - November 2024.

4) Lifetouch PicturesDear parents, School pictures are ready! To order, log in to your account on mylifetouch.ca or create an account using your student's student ID number. Paper proofs will also be sent to your home in the near future. All families can also log on and order a FREE digital Pictures2Protect Card. More about the Pictures2Protect program here.

5) Tutoring for TuitionWe are now providing tutoring services for students through the tutoring for tuition program. If a teacher or parent would like to refer students for tutoring. please contact Ms. Slade or Ms. Reid. 

6) Student Leadership Committee: Members of the Student Leadership Committee will have a brief meeting Tuesday, November 5th 2024 at 2pm. The meeting will be with Ms. Rex who is leader of Comprehensive School Health Project. 

7) Girls BasketballGirls basketball practice will be canceled this Tuesday, November 5th 2024

8) Indoor Soccer Practices:  Soccer practices this week are needing to be changed due to scheduling in the gym. Please see information below: Girls Soccer will go ahead this TUESDAY from 3-4:30pm. Boys Soccer will go ahead this WEDNESDAY from 3-4:30pm. These practices are mandatory for any player wishing to participate in the upcoming regional qualifier tournaments. 

9) Drama Practice and AuditionsThere will be a final practice for Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday from 2:45-4pm. We will also hold auditions for the Christmas plays after the practice. If those of you who are not in the remembrance day assembly but would like to audition for the christmas plays, then come to see Ms. Reid, Mr. O'Keefe or Ms. Howell to set up a lunch time audition. Students can pick up copies of scripts to audition at the office.

10) After School Tutoring: Mr. Holloway's after school tutoring will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:00 to 4:00pm. 

11) Remembrance Day Assembly: Baccalieu Collegiate will honour Remembrance Day with an assembly. The assembly is open to the public and for students on Friday, November 8th 2024 beginning at 11:00am. The public are encouraged to attend!

12) Avalon Senior High Math LeagueThis event is happening at 3:30 on Thursday, Dec. 4. Students from schools across the region work in teams of four to solve a series of math problems in a competition for first place. If you are interested in participating please contact Mr. Holloway or Ms. Slade! (PS there are usually prizes and free food).

14) Sports: Believe it or not, there's more sports and activities happening at Baccalieu! Please see the Baccalieu Events Calendar for up-to-date practice times and tournaments.

15) ALTERShawna Squires band ALTER will be playing a gig on November 22,2024, at Second Stage in St.John’s. This is an all ages venue. performers include ALTER, Mantra, Kicker, Little fauna, Tangerine Machine and headliner Sheavy! More details to come as the show gets closer

18) Reminder -- Absence Form (Family): Child Absent? Complete the form BCP ABSENT FORM without having to call or email the respective homeroom teacher. You can do that too. 

19) Assessment Support Calendar: Please do your best to add assessments to our Assessment Support Calendar. This calendar is shared on our www.baccalieucollegiate.ca site for both students and families to see and support their organization. Additionally, give our IRT team a heads up at your earliest convenience so that they can mobilize effectively to support. 


20) School Allergies: Please be aware that the following foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies including nuts, fish, shellfish, egg, and pumpkin. 

21) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Do not order a shirt with a number without consulting directly with your coach. BCP Athletic shirts are a quality low cost option for short term sports teams. Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Memorial University: Thank-you to Memorial University for visiting our school to present information to our Grades 10-12 students! 
  • Grade 9 volleyball girls team: This past Saturday the grade 9 girls volleyball team played in a tournament at amagulmated Bay Roberts, the girls played hard but came up short, in a competitive playoff game. 
  • Grade 8 volleyball: Girls had a great weekend at volleyfest , they had some very intense nail biting games. No medals but had a lot of fun and made lots of memories.  
  • Baccalieu Collegiate Halloween spirit week: Thank-you BCP Leadership and students for organizing a very spirited week of Halloween!!
  • Field Trip: Thank-you students and staff for making a great field trip to St. John's last week. Teachers reported an excellent representation of the school and very engaged students! 
  • Picture Day: Thank-you everyone for making a successful picture day!
  • Occupational Health and Safety Orientation: Thank-you teachers for completing the required training. 
  • Randy DeGruchy visit: Big thanks to Mr. DeGrunchy for visiting our school and helping out students!
