BCP Family Weekly Updates: Tuesday, October 1st 2024 (DAY 6)

Dear Families

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!  Welcome to October!! Thank-you in advance for taking the time to review updates and important reminders! Any questions or concerns let me know. If I have missed anything please reply-all to this email. 

BCP Weekly Updates Submission Form: A focus at Baccalieu Collegiate in the 2024 school year is to build a strong and connected community. A pillar to building this is effective communication. Volunteer coaches, members of town council, families etc.  are invited to share information, events, and/or good news with our BCP community via BCP Weekly Updates Submission FormPlease complete the form to have your news pertinent to students and families shared on our BCP weekly updates email. 

                                           Updates and Important Information

1) Cell Phone Policy: Families, please ensure your children understand the cell phone policy at Baccalieu Collegiate. In particular, students must keep phones in their bookbags. Pockets are not good enough. Cell phones are not permitted out of student bags at any point during classtime including while students are excused from class to use the washroom etc. Students violating the policy will have their phone confiscated. Thank-you to the vast majority of students doing a wonderful job and following the rules accordingly. 

2) Cross Country Running: There will not be any Cross Country practice running this week. Cross Country regional qualifiers will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd 2024 in Carbonear. Please see Powerschool forms to complete the permission and pay the registration cost. The form will be online early Tuesday, October 1st 2024 morning. The permission form will include details.

3) Senior Boys Basketball: Senior Boys Basketball Training/Tryout will continue on Tuesday, October 1st 2024 from 7:00-9:00pm.

4) BCP Student Leadership Council & Representatives Group: Baccalieu Collegiate is inviting students who would like to join the Leadership group to please complete the following Student Leadership Interest Form. Students Leadership is for students who would like to be a part of organizing student spirit days and events, gain valuable training and experience leading, and represent student voice at Baccalieu Collegiate. Students can join the Leadership Committee and/or become a class representative. Please complete the form before Wednesday, October 2nd 2024.

5) BCP Lighthouse Project Sign-up: There will be a sign-up sheet in the office for any students interested in joining the Lighthouse Project Team. Skill building in areas of photography and videography will begin soon. Fifteen students will also be selected to gain broadcasting training by CBC's very own October 15th 2024. Stay tuned for more information. Please include your name on the LH sheet for more information. 

6) Textbook Loan Program: Reminder to return any textbook(s) that was issued to your son/daughters in the 2023-2024 school year. Letters were sent out last June informing you of which book needs to be returned along with the associated replacement cost.

7) CDLI Meeting the Teacher Night: Please note that any families with students taking CDLI course(s) are welcome to meet the teacher night on Thursday, October 3rd 2024 starting at 7pm. Please see the following INFORMATION

8) School Council: Any parents/guardians/community representatives interested in joining the School Council please reach out to Mr. Saxby before Friday, October 4th 2024

9) After School Tutoring: Mr. Holloway's after school tutoring will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:00 to 4:00pm. 

10) Badminton Interest: Ms. Oliver would like to start a Badminton Club after school at the John Hoskins Community Center in the near future. A letter of interest will be shared with the students in the upcoming days. If there are any adults that would like to help build Badminton in the area please email Ms. Oliver at nancyoliver@nlschools.ca 

11) BCP Close out Day: Please note that Baccalieu Collegiate has tentatively scheduled Closeout PL Day on Friday, October 11th 2024

12) Picture Day: Please be advised that Baccalieu Collegiate picture day is October 29th 2024

13) Reminder -- Absence Form (Family): Child Absent? Complete the form BCP ABSENT FORM without having to call or email the respective homeroom teacher. You can do that too. 

14) School Allergies: Please be aware that the following foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies including nuts, fish, shellfish, egg, and pumpkin. 

15) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Do not order a shirt with a number without consulting directly with your coach. BCP Athletic shirts are a quality low cost option for short term sports teams. Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • School Forms: Thank-you to our families for completing the necessary forms for students through the Rycor forms portal! Greatly appreciated. If you have not done so already, please do as soon as possible. 
  • Thank-you: Big thanks to Janice Stein for donating her DSLR Camera to our Lighthouse project students to work with!
  • Sea Cadets: Thank-you 295 Baccalieu Cadets for presenting the amazing opportunities to Grades 7-9 students. 
  • Cross Country: Thank-you Mr. Barrett and all good luck to all the runners competing in this year's cross country events!
  • Senior Boys Basketball: Congratulations to our Boys Soccer Team on a silver medal in the Regional Soccer Qualifier Tournament this past weekend. The team displayed great sportsmanship and worked very hard. Congratulations to Michael Noonan on receiving the sportsmanship award! 
  • Drama sign-up and meeting: Big thanks and good luck to Ms. Reid and Mr. O'Keefe for getting the Drama Troupe going again. Thank-you to all student hands involved. Should turn out to be a great and fun year! 
  • KES looking for volunteers: Thank-you Ms. Leshane and our volunteers for successfully getting our Breakfast program up and on the go. We are looking for volunteers to lighten the load. Please reach out to Ms. Leshane if you can help!
  • Gr. 8 & 9 Immunization Consent Forms: Thank-you families for returning immunization consent forms! 
  • Lighthouse Project: Thank-you to everyone who showed up to the past Lighthouse meeting. Lots of training and fun coming the Lighthouse way! 
  • Boys Soccer: Congrats to the Boys soccer team who placed second in the past weekend Regional Qualifier!

  • Soccer and Softball: Huge thank-you to all the staff and community members who helped out with this year's soccer and softball squads. Thank-you to Old Perlican Rec for allowing up their fields to practice. Thank-you Ms. Petten and Ms. Oliver! 

  • Girls Volleyball: Thank-you to our Girl's Volleyball Volunteer coaches for beginning their respective seasons and providing opportunity for youth involvement and growth of sport.
