BCP Family Weekly Updates: Tuesday, December 19th 2023

Dear Families


The Christmas holidays are right around the corner. My apologies for the late updates. Unfortunately, I was struck by sickness and could not send these out more timely.  Thank-you in advance for taking the time to review updates and important reminders! Any questions or concerns let me know. If I have missed anything please reply-all to this email. 

                                            Updates and Important Information

1)  Awards Night: The 2022-23 Awards Day and Night will be forthcoming on Monday, December 18th 2023. Grades 7-11 awards will be presented in the afternoon periods 4 and 5 and all classes will attend. The evening Cap and Gown ceremony will begin at 7pm (graduates showing up earlier) the same evening. This event is past! Thank-you to everyone involved. Congrats to all of our students who were awarded accolades for their hard work and focus on selfless endeavors. Congratulations to our past graduates! 

2) Christmas Outing: This year we will be going on our annual Christmas Outing on Tuesday December 19, 2023. Please note parents/guardians must complete the online Rycor permission form to attend. Payment online is also available for convenience and families are encouraged to complete both the form and payment online. Powerschool instructions to support parents/guardians can be accessed by clicking the link. Families in special circumstances can request the permission form in paper copy from the office as well as make cash payment. This event is happening now! Thank-you to staff for making this opportunity for our students happen!  

3)  Last School Day Before Holidays: Please note that our last day (1/2 day) of school is Wednesday, December 20th 2023. Our School Leadership group and teachers are organizing a number of fun and connection activities for students to participate in during the morning! Bus dismissal for students will be at 12:30pm

4) Skilled Trades Volunteers: Still looking, spread the word. Any persons in our community who would like to volunteer to help mentor our students in the shop please reach out to jeffsaxby@nlesd.ca and/or call the school 709 587-3211. Skilled trade modules include: plumbing, electrical, flooring, framing, etc. Members of the community who are interested in positively influencing our students' work please reach out to find out more information. Please note that the email was changed due to problems with the other email. We did not receive any messages due to technical issues. 

5) GET AHEAD: Check the Calendar (www.baccaliecollegiate.ca) for further and future updates including extra and co-curricular events and special events upcoming!


Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Study Hall: Huge thank-you to Ms. Holloway and Tutors for Tuition for creating a space all year after school Tuesdays and Wednesdays to allow students focused time and support towards their learning. This will continue in the New Year and any and all students are invited to attend. 
  • Gathering History Project: Huge thank-you to Mr. Barrett, Ms. Sequiera and all the students and staff involved making this event a hit amongst our elders! We had over 30 elders from our community that shared in our Christmas Dinner organized by our School Council and shared their stories of the past with our students! 
  • School Council Christmas Dinner: Huge thank-you to our School Council and volunteers to help make our Christmas Dinner for our students extra special! School Council members were in the kitchen 8am making final preparations and throughout the whole school day. We are very thank-ful for such a supportive community helping deliver happy times for our school, students, staff, and members of the community. Thank-you!
  • Student Christmas Dance: Thank-you to teachers and Leadership students for organizing an awesome dance party this past Thursday, December 14th 2023. 
  • Grow-up Program: Day 2 of our Splash Centre Grow-up program was another amazing success! Thank-you Career Education students, Splash Centre staff, and BCP teachers for allowing the offering of this amazing program to help prepare our youth for the future. 
  • Christmas Concert: Thank-you to all who came to enjoy our Christmas concert this past December 12th 2023. Huge thank-you to Ms. Reid, Ms. Bolt, and Ms. Sequiera who led our Drama Troupe and Musical artists to prepare and perform so beautifully! Great job and thank-you!
  • Cash Lottery: Thank-you to all of the students, parents, and community for the fundraising support for the school! Lottery draw is the first Friday in January! Who will be our winners?
  • Lighthouse Project: Thank-you to Scott Legge, Brilliant Labs, Music NL and Trinity Hall for providing our students such an incredible and inspiring experience learning how to professionally produce video of events in our community. Keep up the great work and we look forward to our current students training more in the future!  
  • Doorways: Thank-you Doorways for being here and meeting with your students. We conversate all the time. Why not with someone who has your best interests in mind and is trained to help?
  • XMAS Outing: Thank-you Ms. Doyle and all of our teachers for organizing and implementing our Christmas Outing to Carbonear! 

  • Chess Club: Great work chess club! Thanks Mr. Holloway for leading this for our students. 

  • Music with Ms. Sequeira: Great job students in music! Thank-you students and Ms. Sequeira! 

  • Girls Basketball: Way to go Coach Regev and the girls basketball!! Trust the process!

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, December 11th 2023 (DAY 11)

Dear Families,

Happy Monday. I hope everyone enjoyed their very busy weekend (presumed). One more weekend left until the Christmas holidays and a time to relax with the ones that are close to you. This week will be busy with fabulous events but also remember the learning continues and assessments are still part of the process. Please support your children time management and encourage focus.                                           Updates and Important Information

1) No gymnasium: In preparation for the Baccalieu Collegiate Christmas concert the Drama Troupe will need access to the front part of the stage on Monday, December 11th 2023 and Tuesday, December 12th 2023. Lunchtime gym access will be cancelled for both days. All afterschool practices will be cancelled until Wednesday, December 13th 2023 in preparation of the event. Thank-you in advance for your cooperation. 

2)  Cash Lottery: Deadline for lottery tickets to be in is Friday, December, 15th 2023. Unsold tickets MUST be passed back in on or before Friday, December 15th 2023. Last week for big sales! Thank-you everyone for providing your community chance to win the $5000.00. The odds are especially right. 

3) Christmas Concert: Baccalieu Collegiate will be presenting a spirited Christmas Concert on December 12th 2023. This amazing event will be open to the public. Monetary donations will be collected at the door as well as a place to donate non-perishables for the local food bank. Raffle tickets will be available at the concert for a gift basket. Doors for the concert will open at 6:30pm with the show starting at 7pm 

4) Grow-up Program: Day 2 of the Career Education's Splash Centre Grow-up Program delivery will be Thursday, December 14th 2023

5) Student Christmas Dance: Student Leadership will be hosting A Christmas Dance on Thursday, December 14th 2023 evening from 7pm to 9pm. Dance rules and guidelines can be found here

6) School Council Christmas Dinner: Baccalieu Collegiate annual School Council Christmas dinner will be going ahead on Friday, December 15th 2023 at 11:55am for all students and staff. The dinner will be served by school council members and volunteers. During lunch all students are required in the gymnasium. This is a special occasion for all to come and break bread together so there will not be adequate supervision in the rest of the building during this time. Students are permitted not to attend, however they will need to leave school premises during the lunchtime. We're happy to invite School Council members and volunteers into the school during this day preparing this amazing feast.

7) Gathering History Project: Baccalieu Collegiate will be inviting seniors from our school communities to the school on Friday, December 15th 2023 starting at 1pm. Seniors will be served Christmas dinner and invited to share stories from their past with participating students. 

8) Canteen Services: Please note Canteen services will end until the New Year on Friday, December 15th 2023

12) Tutor Hall: We have a few Tutors for Tuition who can now work with students directly after school. Teachers who have students struggling can reach out to families and make the recommendation that their child stay after school for a quiet space to work and gain support.  

13) Accident/Incident Form: Please be advised that Accident/Injury Report forms must be completed if/when an injury to a student occurs in your supervision. The Accident/Incident Form should be completed and sent to Mr. Barrett for review before he submits it to the district. He will then receive an automatic reply confirming receipt, as well as a reminder of next steps should a parent/guardian need to open a claim with Student Insurance (SSQ) because of an injury.  

14) Assessment Support Calendar: Please do your best to add assessments to our Assessment Support Calendar. This calendar is shared on our www.baccalieucollegiate.ca site for both students and families to see and support their organization. Additionally, give our IRT team a heads up at your earliest convenience so that they can mobilize effectively to support.

Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • In-School Provincial Ceremony: Thank-you to all who help make for a very successful raising of the banner ceremony for the 3A Provincial Champion Sr. Girls Volleyball Team. Again, congratulations to the team!
  • Sr. Boys Basketball: Congrats to the Senior Boys team who competed this past weekend at Baltimore School. The boys lost all hard fought games. 
  •  CDLI Virtual Family-Teacher interviews: Thank-you CDLI teachers for taking the time to meet with families of students including support our BCP families. 
  • Doorways: Thank-you Doorways for being here and meeting with your students. We conversate all the time. Why not with someone who has your best interests in mind and is trained to help?
  • School Council Meeting: Big thanks to our selfless School Council for supporting the growth of the school and for spreading spirit and joy this Friday, December 15th 2023.
  • Staff Meeting: Huge thank-you to the amazing BCP teachers and staff. 
  •  Junior High Math Competition: Congrats Ms. Slade and all the hardworking students and teachers who supported a very successful Junior High Math Competition last week! 
  • Treats in December: Thank-you teachers for spreading sugar rush cheer! 

  • Lighthouse Project: Big thanks to Scott Legge and students for their continuing work learning the Lighthouse ropes. Thank-you teachers for not only accommodating but also for making their learning count. Thank-you Mr. Fudge, Ms. Leshane, and the Grade 8 and Grade 10 class for their participation in the Active Schools initiative. 

  • Splash Centre Grow-up Program: Big thanks to our Career Education class and the Splash Program for an amazing day one of the GROW-UP PROGRAM!

  • Drama and Music: Huge thanks to Ms. Reid, Ms. Bolt and Ms. Sequeira for leading our Christmas concert charge! The production is going to be spectacular but not without tremendous commitment and hardwork. Way to go Drama Troupe! 

  • XMAS Outing: Thank-you Ms. Doyle for organizing our Christmas Outing next week! 

  • Cash Lottery: Thank-you to everyone for supporting our fundraiser!! Keep crushing it! Go for the pizza party! Go for the gold! 

  • Chess Club: Great work chess club! Thanks Mr. Holloway for leading this for our students.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, December 4th 2023 (DAY 6)

Dear Families,

Congratulations to our Senior Girls Volleyball squad for winning the 3A Provincial BANNER! This is only the school's second banner ever and both lead by Coach Alan Ash! The team took home both the banner and Most Sportspersonlike! Congrats Jessica Slade (MVP!), Anna March Mulroney (Sportspersonship!) and all the squad for dominating their respective roles! Thank-you in advance for taking the time to review updates and important reminders!                                        Updates and Important Information

1) Lighthouse Project: Scott Legge will be at our school Monday, December 4th 2023 and possibly for longer. Scott will be training more lighthouse members with focus on editing. Currently, the LH crew have lots of amazing footage but need the training to present the final projects more timely. We expect more students from the Junior High group to be "called up" this week to build a larger crew! We're looking for committed crew so if you want to ensure you're trained this week please send Mr. Saxby an email requesting! 

2)  Cash Lottery: Time is ticking down for our Cash Lottery fundraiser! Deadline for lottery tickets to be in is Friday, December, 15th 2023. Unsold tickets must also be passed on or before Friday, December 15th 2023 unless granted special permission. 

3) Junior High Math Competition: Junior high math competition is coming up on Tuesday, December 5th 2023 during periods 4 and 5. We're so excited to have such an amazing event come back after long covid!

4) School Council Meeting: We will have our last School Council meeting of the year this Tuesday, December 5th 2023 at 6:30pm.

5) Doorways: Please note that Doorways will be at the school on Wednesday, December 6th 2023 to meet with students. 

6) CDLI Virtual Family-Teacher interviews: will take place on Thursday, December 7th 2023. As a result, there will not be any live classes after 11:35 am on that day. Family-Teacher Conferences will be scheduled using Optis.  We will also be sharing this message with the families of CDLI students, provided that parent/guardian email addresses have been entered into the student CDLI account. 9) Sr. Boys Basketball: Senior Boys Basketball team will travel to Baltimore School for the Broncos Tournament this weekend. Details and schedule on the BCP calendar. 

10) Christmas Concert: Baccalieu Collegiate will be presenting a spirited Christmas Concert on December 12th 2023. Everyone is welcome. Donations will be collected at the door. 

11) Grow-up Program: Day 2 of the Career Education's Splash Centre Grow-up Program delivery will be Thursday, December 14th 2023

12) Christmas Outing: This year we will be going on our annual Christmas Outing on Tuesday December 19, 2023. There will be a cost associated for this trip. This outing is a non-curricular field trip with the intention to celebrate student hardwork and accomplishments in 2023! It is amazing how far we have all come since the pandemic and we are so brilliantly proud of our students! Congrats to our new 7's for showing such kindness - you're first Outing is well deserved! To our Grade 12's and your last Outing -- you've come so far! Please note, this outing is a privilege and if a student(s) behaviour is not on a positive trajectory with respect to the expectations of the school (public institution) the school does reserve the right to prohibit student participation. All students will have the option to go swimming in the morning followed by skating in the afternoon. If students do not wish to go swimming they may go to the mall for an hour. If students do not wish to go skating they will need to go to the stadium with us until skating is over. 

13) Student and Tutor Hall: Are you concerned your child is falling behind or not paying enough attention to their studies? Send them to Study Hall afterschool Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-4pm. Mr. Holloway runs a quiet room with lots of help!

  • Teachers: Big thank-you to our teachers for putting their 100% in for our students! Both as teachers and learners

  • Sr. Boys Basketball: Congrats to the Senior Boys Basketball team for a spirited showing at the Holy Trinity Tigers 8 team tournament in Torbay. 

  • Cash Lottery: Thank-you to everyone for supporting our fundraiser!!

  • Doorways: Thank-you Doorways for being in our school for a students mental health and well being.
