BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, September 16th 2024 (DAY 9)

 Dear Families,

BCP Weekly Updates Submission Form: A focus at Baccalieu Collegiate in the 2024 school year is to build a strong and connected community. A pillar to building this is effective communication. Volunteer coaches, members of town council, families etc.  are invited to share information, events, and/or good news with our BCP community via BCP Weekly Updates Submission FormPlease complete the form to have your news pertinent to students and families shared on our BCP weekly updates email. 

                                                              Updates and Important Information

1) School Allergies: Please be aware that the following foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies including nuts, fish, shellfish, egg, and pumpkin. 

2) Timely, Rycor Forms: Rycor forms will be up posted and ready for completion by parents/guardians by 9:00am Monday, September 16th 2024 via the Powerschool Parent portal. Forms must be completed and include -- Acceptable Use of Technology, Athletic Contract, Media Consent, Core Digital Tools Consent. Please note that most/all forms including permission forms for various events including extra-curricular must be completed via Rycor this year. The office will continue to support families who have challenges accessing their powerschool. 

3) Leadership Meeting: Any students interested in being part of the Student Council/Leadership Team this year please put your name on the sign-up sheet located in the office. There will be a quick meeting at the beginning of lunch on Monday, September 16th 2024 in room 150 to connect and discuss further actions for the team. Anyone interested in being part of leading students spirit and initiatives at the school are invited! 

4) After School Tutoring: Mr. Holloway's after school tutoring will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:00 to 4:00pm.

5) School Sports: Boys Soccer Practices will be held on Monday & Thursday this week from 3:00-4:30pm. Please arrange your rides for pick up at 4:30pm. Girls Soccer Practices will be held on Tuesday & Wednesday this week from 3:00-4:30pm. Please arrange your rides for pickup at 4:30pm. Softball: Boys Softball Practices will be held on Tuesday & Wednesday this week. Please note that any players who would like a ride down to the field can travel on the Old Perlican bus route to be dropped off. Please check out our Baccalieu Events Calendar for most up-to-date event dates and times. Please note any Junior or Senior boys interested in playing basketball this season please sign your name on the sheet located in the BCP office. There will be a meeting for all boys interested in Senior Boys basketball during the second half of lunch on Tuesday, September 17th 2024 in room 150. Seniors Boys will have their first training/tryout session Tuesday night from 7pm to 9pm. Any Girls 7-12  interested in playing basketball this season please sign your name on the sheet located in the BCP office. 

6) Meet and Greet -- Curriculum NightBaccalieu Collegiate will have its Meet and Greet the teacher / Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 19th 2024 starting at 6:30pm. Families are encouraged to attend a general assembly (cafeteria) covering teacher introductions, important announcements, and important calls for volunteers. This will take place from 6:30pm to about 7:00pm followed by an opportunity to share a coffee/tea with our teachers in the gymnasium. During meetings with parents (and outside building a positive connection with them) it is important that you lay out for families your class resources/syllabus, assessment policy/procedures, avenues for communication, in-class and homework routines, restroom procedures, and overall keys to success in your class.

8) Truth and Reconciliation Day: NL Schools will observe National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30th 2024

9) BCP Close out Day: Please note that Baccalieu Collegiate has tentatively scheduled Closeout PL Day on Friday, October 11th 2024

10) BCP Student Centre:  Please note that our Student Centre (former Learning Commons) has Air Hockey, foosball, board games, and now two Roku televisions. Students may hook up their games to the televisions during lunchtime for an appropriate gaming quest or challenge. If students would like to use any of the above they may ask the supervising teacher for the equipment. 

11) Reminder -- Absence/Sign-in/Sign-out (Family): It’s very important that you make attendance a priority for our youth. Consistent attendance is crucial for academic and social success, as it ensures that students are actively engaged and able to fully benefit from the educational opportunities we provide. When students attend school consistently, they not only keep up with their lessons and assignments, but they also develop important life skills such as responsibility, time management, and perseverance. Being present and engaged in the classroom allows students to participate in discussions, collaborate with peers, and build strong relationships. By reinforcing this message, we can work together to encourage our students and their families to prioritize attendance and make the most of their educational experience. Powerschool makes a daily call-out to families of students who had any unexcused absences or unexcused lateness. Please go to the website to review our sign-in, sign-out, and absent procedures including access to our BCP ABSENT FORM (and/or call the office or email homeroom teacher) to formally notify school of an absence. If your child will be late to school you can complete the absence form and indicate in the comments the time that they should be arriving and the reason why. Students signing in late must first report to the office. Furthermore, any students signing-out early for appointments etc. must have a parent/guardian come into the school before their dismissal from class. Once a student is dismissed from class they must come to the office directly before approval to leave. 

12) Reminder --Powerschool -- Rycor Payment/Forms: Baccalieu Collegiate will continue its implementation of the Rycor online form/payment system in September 2024. Please review the links below and access (set-up if needed) powerschool parent portal. You will need to use your parent email that is on file at Baccalieu Collegiate. Please note the Rycor system will work on all devices however it is recommended to use a computer where possible. The following link will provide you with information on the Rycor system and troubleshooting tips: https://www.nlschools.ca/studentsfamilies/rycor.jsp. This calendar is shared on our www.baccalieucollegiate.ca site for both students and families to see and support their organization. Additionally, give our IRT team a heads up at your earliest convenience so that they can mobilize effectively to support.

15) BCP Athletic Shirts and Apparel: Students/Parents/Guardians can now order Baccalieu Predators Athletics shirts through In the Box NL online store. The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. Do not order a shirt with a number without consulting directly with your coach. BCP Athletic shirts are a quality low cost option for short term sports teams. Good News Report (In no particular order)
  • Cell Phones: Thank-you to students and families for following the cell phone policy rules at Baccalieu. Please continue to focus on the learning and your present world during class time. We've not had any families required to attend Baccalieu to pick up phones yet, I believe everyone would like to keep it that way! :)

  • Leadership: Big big thanks to Ms. S Reid and Ms. Howell for leading our student leadership council/group. 

  • Harbour Breeze Cafeteria: Thank-you Brenda and Crystal for an amazing kick-off to our Harbour Breeze cafeteria services! For BCP Harbour Breeze Menu and Harbour Breeze Information click the links. 

  • Student Bookbags: Thank-you to all students for their quick response ensuring bookbags are not left out in the hallways or near exits. 

  • Gasland Litter: Thank-you to all students for their prompt response keeping the road from the school to Gasland and back clean from litter. It is an important part of maturity to understand we must all work together and keep our trash in the trash can. We must all do our part to keep our communities clean! 

  • Staff Meeting: Thank-you teachers for their time and focus during our staff meeting last week. 

  • Soccer, Softball, and Cross Country: Big thank-you to Ms. Oliver, Ms. Leshane, Mr. Barrett, Ms. Petten for giving up their time for our youth in sport! 

  • Students: Great week students!!!

                                         Updates and Important Information

1) School Allergies: Please be aware that the following foods are prohibited at school due to severe allergies including nuts, fish, shellfish, and egg. 

2) Harbour Breeze Cafeteria: Please see the following new BCP Harbour Breeze Menu and Harbour Breeze Information. Cafeteria services will begin Monday, September 9th 2024.

3) Soccer and Softball Sign Up Sheets: Any students in Grades 7-12 who are interested in playing Outdoor Soccer or Softball this year please sign up on the sheets just inside the gym doors. Any questions please see Ms. Petten.

4) School Sports: Soccer- Monday, Sept. 9th 2024 from 3-4pm there will be Girls Soccer Practice. Wednesday, Sept. 11th there will be Boys Soccer Practice from 3-4pmPlease arrange a pick up for 4pm. Softball- There will be a Boy's Softball Practice on Monday Sept. 9th from 3-4:30pm. Volleyball- There is a sign up sheet posted in the gymnasium for Senior Girls Volleyball. Please sign up if you are interested in playing this year.

7) BCP Student Centre:  Please note that our Student Centre (former Learning Commons) has Air Hockey, foosball, board games, and now two Roku televisions. Students may hook up their games to the televisions during lunchtime for an appropriate gaming quest or challenge. 

8) Gasland Litter: It was reported that students are littering the grounds between Baccalieu Collegiate and Gasland during lunchtime. This is wildly inappropriate and unnecessary. Students are asked to keep our community clean and throw their garbage in the trash cans. Parents/guardians please also discuss with your child.  

9) Student Bookbags: Students are asked not to leave their book bags in the hallways or by doors as this creates unnecessary trip hazards. Please manage your books and backpacks in lockers. 

10) Volunteer Meeting: Baccalieu Collegiate is inviting any community/family members who would like to volunteer their time in cooperation with the school for a meeting at 6:10pm on Thursday, September 19th 2024 (before the Meet and Greet/ Curriculum Night).

School is no place for these addictive substances that harm our young adolescents' health.  This policy also includes banning any person wearing clothing that promotes respective unhealthy habits.   • Lighthouse Project Meeting: Congrats to Cameron Bursey, Jack Shappard and Shawna Squires who attended Friday and Saturday of Music Celebration Week with Scott Legge and as part of the Lighthouse Project. 

  • Softball: Thank-you Ms. Oliver for getting our boys out to enjoy the game of softball.

  • Teachers: Huge thank-you to all of our teachers for being the professionals that they are and doing a fantastic job in the first days of school. 

  • Students: Huge thank-you to students for being responsible, positive, mature about following the rules on the first week of school.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: BCP Family Weekly Updates: September 4th 2024 (DAY 1) (1st Day of the 2024-25 School Year!)

Dear Families, 

Welcome back to a new school year! Baccalieu staff are excited to connect with students and work with them in a constructive environment. I would like to remind our families that Baccalieu Collegiate Vision is to build a safe and caring community that cultivates life-long learning. Our efforts will continue to do just this, build a powerful community. It will not be without its discourse, but nothing worthwhile ever came easy. Please see the following important information regarding students' first day of school. There will be more information forthcoming, however, it is just to get you started. Please note: each week you will receive a weekly update doing our best to keep you organized with the many events happening at Baccalieu Collegiate. Weekly updates are sent via email, posted on our school's website (www.baccalieucollegiate.ca).

Bus Information:

Bus Run 1: Leaves Winterton at 7:40am and picks up students to the end of Lead Cove.

Bus Run 2: Leaves Ochre Pit Cove at 7:50am and ends at Caplin Cove.

Bus Run 3: Leaves Bay-de-Verde at 8:05am and also runs to Red Head Cove.

Bus Run 4:  Leaves Grates Cove at 7:40am and travels to Old Perlican (Old perlican may have to judge accordingly during the first couple of days)

Bus Run 5:  Leaves Low Point at 8:00am (mini-bus)

Cafeteria Services: Cafeteria Services will begin on Monday, September 9th 2024. www.harbourbreezecatering.ca. We encourage all families to DOWNLOAD THE FREE HARBOUR BREEZE APP ON YOUR ANDROID OR iOS MOBILE DEVICE. Use the app to order student lunches to ensure they get what they want and do not need to handle money. 

Day 1 Schedule: All students should proceed to the gymnasium after arriving at school on Wednesday, September 4th 2024. We will have a general assembly to kick off the year before sending students to their homeroom to connect. After the assembly and homeroom students will follow a condensed schedule that will allow them to be introduced to all of their assigned classes. 

Grades 10-12 Course Selections: For any students seeking to change their course schedule there will be an ADD/DROP form available for completion and approval prior to any changes being made. Students should continue to follow their schedule until approval and change is finalized. Changes are not guaranteed. Add/Drop forms are available for pick-up at the office.

Communication at Baccalieu: 

  1. Powerschool: Please ensure families download the Powerschool app and access their students account regularly. Currently Powerschool serves many functions including keeping track of students grades, assignments, and attendance. The apps functionality has been extended this year to include completion of important forms and money transactions. 

  2. Website: Our website is a priority for updates and information. Please view the website for access to calendars, news, scholarship info, forms, guidance, etc. www.baccalieucollegiate.caWeekly updates will be posted under "News."

  3. School Messenger: Every Monday morning there will be a BCP Weekly Update email sent to families outlining the majority of events in the coming week and down the road, along with important updates and information. Please notify administration if you are not receiving these. 

  4. Facebook: Join our Baccalieu Collegiate facebook page for various updates and information. Many important announcements will be shared to the facebook page from the website including our weekly updates

  5. X: You can join our Baccalieu Collegiate @BaccalieuSchool for various updates. Oftentimes there are Tweets and retweets that will not be shared on other platforms. These tweets are more celebratory and often not vital information for families. 

  6. Instagram: Our Baccalieu Collegiate instagram account simply shares some fun pictures etc. 

  7. Teacher Emails: Teachers will be sending out emails to parents/guardians, and students to ensure they organzie and keep on track.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, June 17th 2024 (DAY Does Not Matter)

 Dear Families,

I hope you all had an exciting weekend. It has been a year of much progress for Baccalieu Collegiate which has all come from hardwork and dedication. All of the struggling times equalled progress. All the true happiness comes from the hardwork and perseverance through the struggling times. Thank-you in advance for taking the time to review updates and important reminders!                                            Updates and Important Information

1) Returning Textbooks: All student textbooks must be handed into respective subject teachers today. Locks must be handed into homeroom teachers. Students should be reminded that textbooks are their responsibility and must be returned. Any student not submitting their textbook/lock by Monday, June 17 will need to pay the full price if not returned. 

2) Sports and Extracurricular Day: On Monday, June 17th 2024 Baccalieu will be hosting a Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Day in the morning. Check out the Schedule Thank-you teachers for putting this together! Looks amazing! Let the FUN and competitions begin!

3) Extracurricular Banquet: On Monday, June 17th Baccalieu will be hosting a Sports and Extracurricular Clubs and Activities Banquet in the afternoon. The public is welcome to join! The ceremony begins at 1pm and will include awards and acknowledgements for all BCP Extracurricular students' involvement including sports, drama, music, gaming, leadership, etc. 

4) Cafeteria:  Remember that there will be no cafeteria services for the remainder of the year. Also, if you were not already informed, our great and powerful Brenda Brookings will be retiring after 22 years feeding our school! Please reach out and thank Brenda for all of her years of service and wish her the best retirement ever! Brenda's retirement dinner will be after school today!

5) BCP Year-End School Outing: Baccalieu school is planning a year end field trip during the last week of school on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. We will be taking our students to St. John's for the day to celebrate another successful year and to promote positive community and well-being. Please remind students that their best behaviour is expected. School rules (basic public etiquette) apply on this trip including our Smoke Free Policy. Any students in violation of rules or policy will be under supervision until their parent/guardian travels to pick them up. 

6) 2024-25 Planning Day: On Wednesday, June 19th 2024 there will be no planned events for students. Students who wish to attend will be provided a supervised space in the main foyer area. 

7) Report Card Distribution: On Thursday, June 20th 2024 we will have a condensed day and double bus run for respective Junior and Senior High students. Junior High (7-9) students will be picked up at their normal time. They will arrive, pick-up their reports, bid farewell, and then transport home before Senior High (10-12) students are picked up. Please standby for specific times and will be sent home soon.

Chromebook Return Information for Grade 12 Students: *Our school is now in the process of requesting the return of Chromebooks specifically loaned to students based on the signed Chromebook Loan Agreement. When requested, the assigned Chromebook, AC power charger and the protective sleeve must be returned to the school in satisfactory condition. From the Chromebook Loan AgreementAt the end of the school year, all Chromebook and accessories must be returned to the school with explicit acknowledgement and initials of the Student or Parent/Guardian …” These Chromebooks will be collected from each school by the IT Department and prepared for distribution to the new Grade 7 students coming in the next school year.

11) 2023-2024 Yearbook Orders:  Orders are currently being taken for the 2023-2024 yearbook.  The cost is $10 per copy, and the payment must be made when you place your order.  The deadline is Thursday, June 20.  Please see Mrs. Slade to place an order.

Baccalieu Collegiate will remain committed to combating such an epidemic. Knowledge is power. 

13) Important Memo:  Naloxone Kits Added to First-Aid Response Package for Schools with Junior High and Senior High Grades. We must acknowledge that "young Canadians aged 15-24 are the fastest growing population requiring hospital care from opioid overdoses. People in our province have experienced opioid related harms, and these issues affect both urban and rural populations."

15) Important Allergy Reminder:This is a reminder to our school community that we have people in the school who have scent allergies. Please do not wear strong scents to school as it affects a person's health. Additionally, please do not bring in fish, shellfish, eggs, or nuts. Thank-you.

The clothing options include: dri-fit short sleeve, dri-fit long sleeve, crew neck sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt all in grey or navy blue. NOTE: For some sports teams you will be asked to order a shirt with a number to be used as a jersey, this will be at the direct instruction of your coach. 17) Accident/Incident Form: Please be advised that Accident/Injury Report forms must be completed if/when an injury to a student occurs in your supervision. The Accident/Incident Form should be completed and sent to Mr. Barrett for review before he submits it to the district. He will then receive an automatic reply confirming receipt, as well as a reminder of next steps should a parent/guardian need to open a claim with Student Insurance (SSQ) because of an injury.

BCP Family Weekly Updates: Monday, June 10th 2024 (DAY 14)

Dear Families,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! If you have not done so already, please review this important memo outlining the last four days of regular classes.  Let's finish strong and enjoy closure to a very productive and positive 2023-24 school year! 1) CDLI PL: Please note that CDLI teachers have a PL session today Monday, June 10 2024. Students have been assigned work to complete offline. 

2) NL Studies: NL Studies will be taking an exciting educational visit for enrolled students to Grates Cove Company. Visiting this local business offers a unique opportunity for our students to learn about its operations and the significant impact it has on the local economy of Newfoundland and Labrador including: Understanding Local Business Operations: Students will have the opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations of Grates Cove Company. Economic Impact: The visit will include discussions on the role of Grates Cove Company in supporting the local economy. Historical Significance: In addition to business operations, students will explore the history of the land on which Grates Cove Company is situated. The visit is scheduled for June 10, 2024.

3) Unified Sports Day: Ms. Bolt will be accompanying select students to a very special day at Carbonear on Tuesday, June 11th 2024 to compete in a unified sports day! Congrats to those students attending. 

4) Important Powerschool Notice:
 Please note that a letter will be given to each student in Grades 7-12 at the end of the day on Tuesday, June 11th 2024. This letter includes very important password update information. A new password rule starts on June 12th 2024 and all students will be required to update to meet their specifications. Students must have access to their account prior to Tuesday. 

5) BCP Year-End School Outing: Baccalieu school is planning a year end field trip during the last week of school on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. 10) Returning Textbooks: All student textbooks must be collected and recorded by subject teachers. Locks must be collected and recorded by homeroom teachers. Students should be reminded that textbooks are their responsibility and must be returned when requested.  Please keep an accurate record of all returned textbooks and stress the importance of returning all textbooks. Any student not submitting their textbook/lock by Monday, June 17 will need to pay the full price if not returned. 

11) Cafeteria:  Our Harbour Breeze Cafeteria's last day serving students will be Thursday, June 13th 2024. Please note there will be a limited menu approaching the last days.

The ceremony begins at 1pm and will include awards and acknowledgements for all BCP Extracurricular students' involvement including sports, drama, music, gaming, leadership, etc.
